The current conflict broke out in northern Ethiopia a year ago when the federal government launched a military operation against the rebel separatist organization Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

The organization had ruled the country for many years before being expelled in 2018, and in recent months has managed to regain control of most of the northern region of Tigray, including its capital, Meklee. On Tuesday, TPLF said it had taken control of Shewa Robit and was advancing towards Addis Ababa, about 220 kilometers (136 miles) away.
