South Korea wins first Golden Globe in awards announced online | Entertainment News

The usually glamorous event that marked the start of Hollywood’s awards season was relegated to a live blog with no red carpets, TV shows or stars.

This Golden Globe Awards – A red-carpet, star-studded annual Hollywood event that once drew 18 million TV viewers – was instead held as a live blog after strong criticism last year of a lack of racial diversity.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) continued its film awards show Sunday night without televised, nominations, red carpets, hosts, media or even live broadcasts.

Instead, members of the HFPA and recipients of some of the organization’s charitable grants gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California for a private 90-minute event to announce the film and TV winners on the organization’s social media name.

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story won multiple awards, including Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actress for Rachel Ziegler, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Debos .

Netflix’s goth western, “Dog Power,” was named best drama, and Jane Campion’s director and Cody Smit-McPhee’s supporting role also took home other honors.

Other film winners include Will Smith, Richard King; Nicole Kidman, Becoming Ricardo; and Andrew Garfield, Tick, Tick…Boom! The Japanese film “Drive My Car,” also a critic’s darling, won best non-English film, while “Encanto” won the animation award.

South Korean actor Oh Young-soo won the country’s first Golden Globe for playing Player 001 in Netflix’s hit game “Squid.”

The move comes after the HFPA was criticized for its lack of racial diversity among its members, and critics also questioned whether close ties with film studios could affect the selection of nominees and winners.

In February, an investigation by the Los Angeles Times revealed ethical lapses and a shocking lack of diversity — not a single black journalist was on a panel of 87. Studios and PR firms threatened a boycott. Tom Cruise returned his three Ballon d’Or awards while other A-listers condemned the group on social media.

The HFPA pledged to reform last year, but even with a public announcement during the 78th show, its longtime broadcast partner NBC Announced in May It won’t air the 2022 Golden Globes because “a change of this magnitude takes time and work.”

None of the winners appeared to be present at the event, nor did anyone immediately comment on their awards.

However, Jamie Lee Curtis shared a video message on the group’s Twitter account talking about the HFPA’s charitable work.

“I just wanted to honor them and stand with them in this ongoing advocacy,” Curtis said. “I’m proud to be associated with them in this project.”

HFPA has recruited leaders of the groups it has awarded grants to announce the winners. Arnold Schwarzenegger also posted a video message thanking the organization for recognizing him as “Rising Star of the Year” in 1977.

While announcing the winners on social media may seem like an easy task, those who only follow on Twitter on Sunday nights can be a little confused at times. These tweets often miss which project a person won.

Other times, the tweets are simply baffling. In announcing West Side Story’s victory, the group initially wrote, “If laughter is the best medicine @WestSideMovie is the cure for your disease”, about the drama of death and tragedy. They later deleted the tweet and wrote a new one about “music” being the best medicine.
