Rio cancels carnival for the second year in a row
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, cancelled the carnival parade for the second year in a row.
The mayor of the city stated that this is because of the threats posed by the increase in COVID-19 cases and the arrival of Omicron variants.
Parades usually attract hundreds of thousands of people each year.
Eduardo Paes said in a live webcast: “Street carnival is by its very nature, because it is democratic, it cannot be checked in any form.”
Other Brazilian capitals have also cancelled carnival parades.
