One of the world’s largest offshore wind farms ready for full operation

Turbine commissioning at one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms has been completed, with full operations scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022, according to Deutsche Power AG RWE.

The 857 MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm is located off the east coast of England and uses 90 wind turbines from the Danish company Vestas.

RWE said in a statement on Thursday that Triton Knoll will produce “enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 800,000 households a year.” The investment in the project is about 2 billion pounds ($2.74 billion).

RWE owns 59% of Triton Knoll. Its other owners are Kansai Electric Power and J-Power, which hold 16% and 25%, respectively. RWE is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the project.

Triton Knoll produced its first electricity in March 2021 and installed its last turbine in September last year.

The North Sea, where Triton Knoll is located, is home to many large offshore wind installations. These include the 1.2 GW Hornsea One development, which uses 174 turbines in the waters off Yorkshire.

Looking ahead, major projects planned in the North Sea include the Dogger Bank wind farm, which will have a total capacity of 3.6 GW once completed. The development of the project took place in three phases.

British authorities hope to reach 40 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030. The EU, which Britain left in January 2020, aims to reach 300 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by mid-century.

Across the Atlantic, the United States still has some way to go to catch up with Europe. The first offshore wind facility in the United States, the 30-megawatt Block Island wind farm in the waters off Rhode Island, Commercial operations began in late 2016.

However, changes appear to be coming. In November, a project broke ground Known as the “first commercial-scale offshore wind farm” in the United States.
