Officials said nine children were among the dead, and dozens more were injured in the fire in the Bronx.
According to New York City officials and US media reports, at least 19 people were killed in an apartment building fire in New York City, including 9 children, and dozens of others were injured.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that a fire broke out in a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx at around 11 am on Sunday, killing 19 people.
In an interview with the American media network CNN, Adams said: “Now we have confirmed that 19 people have died and several others are in critical condition.”
The Associated Press quoted a city official as saying that nine of the dead were children.
Stefan Ringel, a senior adviser to the Mayor of Adams, said more than 5 people were injured and 13 people are still in critical condition in the hospital.
About 200 firefighters were sent to extinguish the fire. The chief of the city’s fire department, Daniel Nigro, told reporters that the reason is unclear.
“The members found the victims on every floor of the stairwell and took them away when their heart and breathing stopped,” he said.
Nigro said the smoke has spread to every floor of the building, probably because the door of the apartment where it started was open and the victim inhaled a lot of smoke.
