MOSCOW-Authorities said a fire broke out in a coal mine in Siberia, Russia on Thursday, killing 9 people and injuring 44 others. Dozens of people are still trapped.

The fire broke out in the Kemerovo region in southwestern Siberia. The Russian state news agency TASS quoted an unnamed emergency official who reported that coal dust caught fire and smoke quickly filled the mine through the ventilation system.

A total of 285 people were in the mine at the time of the incident, and 237 of them had been evacuated. Rescue work is still in progress, but is hampered by a large amount of smoke.

The Russian Commission of Inquiry launched a criminal investigation into the fire on charges of violating safety regulations and causing death.
