One of two chemical facilities engulfed in flames reportedly produces chlorine gas

Residents of a fire at a chemical plant in Passaic, N.J., were urged to stay indoors with their windows closed. One of the burning facilities reportedly had a large chlorine reserve.

Despite warnings to local residents to stay indoors, a large group of people, including young children, could be seen outside observing the flames.

The blaze eventually escalated to a Category 10 fire, prompting evacuations of nearby homes. The building reportedly collapsed under the flames. Photos from the scene showed its charred fragments flashing across the night sky.
