National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awards researchers $205,000 for HIV research
Anthony Fauci’s agency awarded more than $200,000 for an experiment that injected male monkeys with estrogen at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to find out why transgender women have higher HIV rates.
Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases gave Scripps Research $205,562 last month to inject male monkeys with female hormones. Scientists plan to monitor how hormones affect men’s immune systems, testing the hypothesis that female hormones negatively affect the immune system of trans women, increasing their likelihood of becoming HIV-positive.
This project Received NIAID funding last year, but started a year ago, in December 2020. Fauci is associated with research into HIV-injected monkeys dating back to the mid-1980s. His agency has reportedly contracted to buy about 500 animals a year from an island in South Carolina to breed them exclusively for U.S. government research, at a cost of millions of dollars a year. government documents Published by campaign group White Coat Waste.
There are no parallel studies of female monkeys injecting male hormones — so the complete absence of trans men from the CDC’s HIV fact sheet is an odd oversight, but it’s justified by pointing out the low infection rates in this population. One point is plausible. Transgender men are nearly as likely to contract HIV as biological women—3% and 4%, respectively—while 19% of transgender women are HIV-positive.
A neuroscientist with animal rights advocacy group PETA Katherine Roe was not impressed by the experiment, arguing that monkeys don’t even get HIV, so the test has no value.Pointless, wasteful monkey torture.Instead, the monkeys were infected with a milder, more survivable form of SIV, the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, she said.
The experiment has again brought Fauci under fire from animal rights groups, who have slammed his agency for being found to have funded horrific beagle experiments, including infecting dogs with heartworm, before euthanizing them.
