President Joe Biden says 2021 attack on U.S. Capitol is an attempt to ‘steal the election’

President Joe Biden has said that Donald Trump supporters wanted to subvert voters when they stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington last year. The remarks came as investigators subpoenaed Trump allies.

“That’s why we’re here today: against the forces in the United States that value power over principle, the forces that attempted a coup, by sowing suspicion, fabricating allegations of fraud and seeking to steal the 2020 election from the people,” Biden said Tuesday in a speech in Atlanta, Georgia.

“They want chaos to rule. We want the people to rule.”

The president last week dubbed the events of January 6, 2021, an “armed uprising” as the country marked the first anniversary of the unrest.Biden allies and some media outlets have long used the term “coup” to describe the seizure of the Capitol.

Biden’s speech on Tuesday came as the House select committee investigating the unrest subpoenaed two strategists with ties to Donald Trump Jr. and a former White House official “Who helped draft the former president’s January 6 speech.”

On January 6, 2021, a group of Trump supporters broke through a police barricade and briefly toppled the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from proving Biden’s victory over Trump in the presidential election.

Trump has repeatedly claimed the election was stolen from him, but many lawsuits brought by his campaign have failed in court. Trump was eventually banned from Twitter and Facebook for allegedly inciting unrest.
