Armenia says a soldier was killed by Azerbaijani shelling

Armenia stated that Azerbaijan’s shelling killed a soldier at a time when tensions on the border between two former Soviet neighbours were heating up.

Yerevan, Armenia — The Armenians said a soldier was killed by Azerbaijani shelling on Monday as tensions on the border between the two former Soviet neighbors were heating up.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are caught in a decades-long dispute in the Nagorno-Karabakh separatist region, which is located in Azerbaijan but has been under the control of Armenian-backed Armenian forces since the end of the separatist war in 1994. Down.

Six weeks later, the fierce fighting that broke out in September 2020 ended with a peace agreement mediated by Russia, which allowed Azerbaijan to gain control of most of Nagorno-Karabakh and regain control of the Armenian army outside the separatist areas. All areas under control.

Tensions escalated again last week, and this is the worst conflict since the 2020 hostilities. Last week, at least seven Azerbaijani soldiers and one Armenian soldier were killed in the fighting.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense stated that the Azerbaijani army once again opened fire on the Armenian position near the border village of Norabak in the Gegharkunik region on Monday, killing a 19-year-old soldier.

Earlier Monday, opposition supporters blocked traffic in the Armenian capital to urge the government to take a tougher stance in the tension with neighboring Azerbaijan.

The protesters asked the authorities not to sign documents on the delimitation and demarcation of the border between the two countries, and rejected the plan for Azerbaijan’s transportation corridor across Armenian territory.

On Monday night, about 2,000 demonstrators marched in the Armenian capital to protest their fears that the deal with Azerbaijan would betray national interests.

The peace agreement promoted by Russia envisages a transport corridor through Armenia, linking Azerbaijan with its enclave, Nakhichevan, a plan that was strongly opposed by the Armenian opposition.
